Το διάσημο κατασκοπευτικό βιβλίο του John le Carre μεταφέρθηκε στη μικρή οθόνη το 1979 με πρωταγωνιστή τον μεγάλο (σε ερμηνευτικό εκτόπισμα, αλλά και σε ηλικία) Alec Guinness και μια πλειάδα άλλων βρετανών ηθοποιών στους υπόλοιπους ρόλους. Ήταν μια μίνι τηλεοπτική σειρά εφτά επεισοδίων (με μ.ο. διάρκεια τα 45 λεπτά) που σκηνοθετήθηκε από τον John Irvin, έμπειρο σε τηλεοπτικές παραγωγές, λίγα χρόνια πριν πάει στο Χόλιγουντ και αρχίσει να γυρίζει χαζομάρες, ως επί τω πλείστον. Το σενάριο επιμελήθηκε ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας, ακολουθώντας κατά γράμμα την πυκνή πλοκή του βιβλίου, αποκλίνοντας λίγο με το θερμό επεισόδιο στην Τσεχία, το οποίο παρουσίασε στο πρώτο επεισόδιο για να μας ενημερώσει εξαρχής για τον τίτλο του έργου και το τι σημαίνουν οι όροι από το παιδικό τραγουδάκι Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Από κει και έπειτα θα παρακολουθήσετε την εγκεφαλική προσπάθεια του Guinness να βρει και να ξετρυπώσει τον «τυφλοπόντικα», τον διπλό πράκτορα δηλαδή που βρίσκεται κοντά στην κορυφή της βρετανικής Μυστικής Υπηρεσίας. Αυτό θα γίνει συλλέγοντας πληροφορίες από όλες μα όλες τις πλευρές, συνθέτοντας δύο φαινομενικά άσχετες ιστορίες, βρίσκοντας το κοινό σημείο μεταξύ τους. Δηλαδή, να είστε έτοιμοι για πολύ διάλογο, σε γραφεία, σε μπαράκια, σε αυτοκίνητα, εστιατόρια και σπίτια.
